Information technology's long preceding time we commit to lie with the melodic theme that first-person platforming doesn't work, when even the retro thrillseekers working low the Haunted PS1 tag are giving games equivalent Titanfall and Mirror's Edge a run for their money.

Lorn's Sweetener, from developer Rubeki, is a terrifying descent into a brutalist, bottomless pit. It's non strictly revulsion, but the infinite void you're descending feels impossibly foreboding, a sense only if added to away the game's sparse, atavist aesthetics.

Non that it would issue if Lorn's platforming didn't feel utterly high-flown. Thankfully, this tiny thriller has some of the outdo first-person movement I've felt in years. It genuinely does feel like an independent take along Titanfall, sans wallrunning—fast run speeds, a healthy degree of air control, and a freehearted mantle onto ledges you didn't quite reach. Even if you miss a start, a quick fourth estate of a button will reset you to the last invulnerable shelf.

The game real shows its hand when it workforce you a pair of climbing picks. Vaporous cliffs suddenly become shortcuts, opening new routes and providing a unpunctual lifeline for failed leaps. Not every surface is climbable, and you've got limited stamina to hang on to—and with these restrictions in set down, the platforming suddenly becomes dense with climbing puzzles.

IT may be small, but I'm already stirred up to see how speedrunners tackle this thing—bounding betwixt thin poles and crooked ledges at terrorisation speeds. I'll be right-hand behind them, anxiously avoiding fatal falls as I slowly reveal more about this eternal, terrifying hole in the ground.

Lorn's Lure is coming to Steam sometime future year, with a fairly brawny free demo available to try now.
